Fall projects season is here and that usually means somebody rushes a gate or a folder cover the week before it needs to look nice! Not a great plan, lol!
A good entrance or a clean layout takes a little planning, but not as much as you’d think. Most of these ideas use stuff you can grab at the hardware store. Or the craft aisle without much fuss.
This list pulls together sixteen ideas across gates, frames, folders, menus and graphic layouts. Every single one got picked after scrolling through way too many pins, haha!
Only the ones that are actually doable made the cut. No fancy tools required, no design degree needed either!
Some of these are weekend builds. Others take twenty minutes with a marker and some sticky notes.
Scroll down for all sixteen, plus the little details that make each one work in real life. Who doesn’t love a good detail?
GATE DESIGN IDEAS
Modern Black Metal Gate
We’re starting off strong with a modern black metal gate. Driveway looked half as sharp before swapping mine to flat black. Clean lines do a lot of heavy lifting here. How sharp is that?
Powder coating keeps the finish from chipping through winter. This one holds up outside way better than a regular paint job. Old gate rusted in two winters flat, so lesson learned there.
- Weekend metal build
- Powder coat lasts through winter
- Looks sharp with zero landscaping
Rustic Wooden Farmhouse Gate
Rustic wooden farmhouse gates never really go out of style. Reclaimed fence boards give this one instant character without buying anything new.
Sand the edges down so nobody gets a splinter opening it.
- Barn wood weekend project
- Sand the edges twice
- Stains beautifully with one coat
Sliding Driveway Steel Gate
Sliding driveway gates solve the space problem swinging ones can’t. No arc needed, so tight driveways finally work. Own driveway is barely wider than the car, so this was the only real option.
A steel frame with a motor kit turns this into a hands-free entrance. One button gets pressed now instead of wrestling a latch every morning. Talk about convenient!
- Solves the tight driveway problem
- Motor kit sold separately
- No swing arc needed
Arched Garden Entry Gate
How pretty is this arched garden entry gate? The curved top makes even a plain fence line look intentional. Own arch sat bare for a full year before anything climbed it.
Climbing roses trained along the arch fill in within a season or two. Give it a couple years and the whole thing disappears under greenery, lol!
- The climbing rose classic
- Fills in within two seasons
- Works on chain link too
Bamboo Privacy Fence Gate
Bamboo privacy fence gates bring a totally different vibe than wood or metal. They block the view from the street without feeling heavy. Last wood gate warped so badly it stuck every summer, so this switch felt overdue.
This one holds up well in humid climates, which regular fencing often struggles with. Swap it in over a weekend if yours is looking tired since it takes barely any tools. Mine took one Saturday, start to finish!
Ornate Wrought Iron Gate
Ornate wrought iron gates are for the drama lovers. Scrollwork details make this feel like it belongs outside a castle, haha! Own gate gets more compliments than the actual house at this point, am I right?
These are heavier than a basic metal frame, so hinges need to be rated for the extra weight. Worth every bit of the upgrade if curb appeal is the goal!
- The showstopper of the whole list
- Needs heavy duty hinges
- Custom scrollwork available at most shops
Reclaimed Wood Photo Frame
Reclaimed wood photo frames are one of the favorite frame design ideas for a gallery wall that doesn’t look store bought. Old pallet wood works perfectly and it’s basically free!
Distress the corners with sandpaper for a worn in look. This one gets more compliments than the actual photo inside, lol! Not in my book does that happen with plain frames.
- Basically free from pallet scraps
- Distress with rough sandpaper
- Fits any standard photo size
Macrame Wall Hanging Frame
Macrame wall hanging frames turn a blank wall into something with texture instantly. No knot skill required beyond the basics, which is a relief. First attempt looked lopsided but nobody’s noticed yet, haha!
A wooden dowel and some cotton cord are the whole shopping list. This one takes about an hour, mostly knotting while a podcast plays in the background.
- One hour of easy knotting
- Cotton cord from the craft aisle
- Dowel from the hardware store
Watercolor Painted Binder Cover
Watercolor painted binder covers are one of the prettiest folder design ideas for anyone tired of plain plastic. A loose wash of color looks intentional even when it’s messy. Who doesn’t love a happy accident?
Let the paint dry fully before sliding it into the plastic sleeve. It curls otherwise, ask how that lesson got learned, haha!
- Messy watercolor wins every time
- Dry fully before sleeving
- Any craft paint works fine
Minimalist Kraft Paper Folder
Minimalist kraft paper folders are the opposite of the watercolor one and honestly just as pretty. Plain brown paper with a single stamped word looks clean on any desk.
This is the one to grab for a work presentation. It says organized without trying too hard! Same energy as a clean desk on a Monday.
- The one desk actually needs
- Kraft paper from the office aisle
- One stamp is all it takes
Bold Typography Poster Layout
Bold typography posters are having a real moment. Oversized letters and a single color background make the message impossible to miss. Own attempt came out crooked and it still got hung anyway, lol!
This is a favorite among graphic design ideas because it’s forgiving. Even a slightly crooked layout still reads as intentional, which honestly saved the day.
- Impossible to scroll past
- One bold font does it all
- Prints great at poster size
Retro Gradient Logo Design
Retro gradient logos bring back that late nineties feel in the best way. Sunset colors fading into each other make even a simple wordmark look fun. Who doesn’t love a good gradient?
Not that there’s bias toward anything with a gradient, but this one is genuinely everywhere lately for good reason. Same goes for half the coffee shop logos downtown!
Rustic Chalkboard Cafe Menu
A rustic chalkboard menu is the easiest fix for a cafe that wants personality. Handwritten lettering feels warmer than any printed menu ever could. Handwriting is rough here, but somehow it still works.
Chalk markers wipe clean way easier than actual chalk, worth knowing before opening day. Specials get erased and rewritten without leaving a ghost of yesterday’s soup, lol!
- Handwritten beats printed every time
- Chalk markers wipe clean easily
- Great for daily specials
Elegant Tri-Fold Restaurant Menu
Elegant tri-fold menus are for restaurants going for a fancier feel. This one belongs in the category of food menu design ideas that actually get photographed by guests. That own attempt at one got snapped by three tables in a single night, which said everything!
Cream paper stock with gold foil text takes it up a notch immediately, since guests notice paper before they notice prices. It’s a small upgrade that changes the whole first impression of a place.
- The upgrade guests notice first
- Gold foil text on cream stock
- Folds to fit any hand
Doodle Covered School Folder
Doodle covered folders are one of the best this design ideas school kids actually get excited about. A plain folder becomes a whole art project with a permanent marker and free time. Nephew covered his entire folder in tiny dinosaurs last September. If hunting for this design ideas school was the goal, this one is a keeper! If you were hunting for folder design ideas school, this one is a keeper!
It survived the whole year somehow, which shocked all involved. This is the one that gets compliments in the hallway, according to him, haha!
- Survives an entire school year
- Permanent marker works best
- Plain folder from the dollar store
Venn Diagram Classroom Poster
Last but definitely not least, we have this Venn diagram classroom poster. Two overlapping circles have never looked this good on a wall. How cute is this?
This lands squarely in graphic organizer design ideas territory and teachers everywhere already know it works. Bright colors on each circle make the overlap section pop without any extra effort!
- The overlap does all the work
- Bright colors per circle
- Laminate for a full school year
