Skip the intro · jump to the list ↓

Happy lunch season, you guys! I don’t know about you, but I am so over the sad desk sandwich, lol! Around this time of year my kitchen turns into a tiny assembly line every single morning.

How could anyone resist a bento box with little compartments for everything? Not me! Something about a perfectly packed container just makes food taste better, haha!

Every August my neighbors and I trade lunch ideas over coffee before the school buses even show up. Last year we made a running list. It turned into a friendly little contest for who packed the cutest tray! Nobody won a prize, but bragging rights are still on the table.

Since packing lunches is basically a year round job at this point, I’ve gathered 20 pack lunch ideas the entire family will actually eat. Don’t fret if you’ve never packed anything fancier than a peanut butter sandwich, because every idea here starts simple.

From bento boxes to mason jars and sheet pan fajitas, there’s something in here for the neighborhood kids, the office and the weekly meal prep grind. Under each idea I’ve added the little details you actually want to know, plus a link to the full step-by-step. Who doesn’t love a good shortcut?

PACK LUNCH IDEAS

1. Bento Box Chicken Teriyaki

Bento box chicken teriyaki is where I always start when lunch has gotten boring. The little compartments keep the rice from turning into a sad soggy pile by noon. Sticky glazed chicken next to rice and steamed broccoli looks like a whole meal instead of leftovers.

I have stopped fighting it. The glaze alone is worth the extra five minutes!

  • The compartment fix
  • Rice stays fluffy in its own box
  • Glaze thickens in ten minutes

2. Turkey Wrap Pinwheels

How cute are these turkey wrap pinwheels? Sliced into little rounds, they look fancy with basically no effort.

Cream cheese holds the turkey and spinach together so nothing unrolls in the lunch bag. These disappear fast at picnics too. Even the pickiest eaters go back for seconds!

  • No unrolling, ever
  • Cream cheese is the glue
  • Slices ahead the night before

3. Mason Jar Layered Salad

Mason jar layered salad finally solved my sad lettuce problem by lunchtime. Dressing goes on the bottom, greens go on top; gravity does the rest. Shake it right before eating and it tastes fresh every time.

She’s been packing one every day for years now!

  • Dressing on the bottom always
  • Stays crisp for four days
  • Any leftover veggie works

4. Ham Cheese Croissant Box

Ham cheese croissant box feels like a bakery run without leaving the kitchen. Split croissants, layer ham and cheese. Tuck them next to some grapes.

This is the one I pack when mornings run late and patience is running low. Five minutes, tops, lol!

  • Bakery vibes, zero effort
  • Ready in under ten minutes
  • Grapes make it feel fancy

5. Cucumber Avocado Rice Rolls

Cucumber avocado rice rolls are one of my favorite light lunch ideas when the weather gets warm. Rolled tight in nori, they hold together better than you’d think.

Slice them thin so every piece shows off the little swirl of avocado in the middle. They travel well too, so pack them without worry.

  • Cool weather or not
  • Rolls tight with a bamboo mat
  • No cooking needed for the filling

6. Greek Yogurt Fruit Parfait

Greek yogurt fruit parfait is the breakfast that moonlights as lunch in our house. Layers of yogurt, granola and berries look like a treat but eat like something healthy.

The granola stays crunchy if it goes in last. That’s the whole secret, honestly. Who knew such a small trick could matter this much?

  • Granola goes in last
  • Berries stay bright for days
  • Honey drizzle optional but recommended

7. Caprese Skewers Snack Box

Caprese skewers snack box looks like the fanciest thing on this whole list, but don’t be fooled. It is just mozzarella, tomato and basil on a stick. I add balsamic on the side when I want lunch to feel a little special.

Not that lunch needs to be fancy, but it is nice sometimes! Who doesn’t love a tiny bit of drama on a Tuesday?

  • Fancy with zero cooking
  • Basil keeps it smelling fresh
  • Balsamic packed on the side

8. Quinoa Chickpea Salad Jar

Quinoa chickpea salad jar is one of my go to office lunch ideas because it holds up all week in the fridge. Nothing wilts, nothing gets soggy.

  • Good cold, no reheating
  • Cherry tomatoes add a pop
  • Pesto keeps noodles from sticking

10. Sushi Roll Bento Set

Sushi roll bento set makes a boring Tuesday feel like a tiny celebration. Little compartments hold soy sauce, ginger and rolls without anything sliding around. I always use store bought rolls when I am short on time.

Nobody at the office needs to know, haha!

  • Tuesday but make it fancy
  • Soy sauce rides in its own tiny cup
  • Rolls stay put in the tray

11. Rainbow Veggie Wrap Box

Rainbow veggie wrap box is one of the prettiest packed lunch ideas out there. Peppers, carrots and purple cabbage all stack inside a tortilla. I wrap it tight in parchment so it slices clean without falling apart.

Who would have guessed a purple cabbage could win over a six year old?

  • Vegetables nobody argues about
  • Purple cabbage for the color

  • Banana slices go in last
  • Ten minutes start to finish

13. Panda Face Rice Bento

Panda face rice bento turns plain rice into the star of the tray. Nori cutouts make the eyes and ears, plus a few peas fill the gaps. This one solved that problem overnight.

  • Rice with a personality
  • Nori scissors make cutting easy
  • Peas fill the empty corners

14. Dinosaur Shaped Sandwich Box

Dinosaur shaped sandwich box is a favorite among kindergarten lunch ideas because the shape does all the convincing. A dinosaur cutter turns regular bread into a small event. I fill mine with cheese and ham, but honestly anything works once the shape is this exciting.

How cute is that?

  • The shape sells the sandwich
  • One cutter does the whole job
  • Any filling still works great

15. Fruit Kabob Lunch Tray

Fruit kabob lunch tray is the easiest way to get a kid excited about fruit. Skewer grapes, melon and strawberries and suddenly snack time is a whole production. I pack these for school picnics because they never turn into mush.

Even the pickiest kid at the table asks for one. Who doesn’t love fruit on a stick?

  • Fruit that gets eaten first
  • Skewers trimmed short for little hands

16. Grilled Chicken Meal Containers

Grilled chicken meal containers are the backbone of most meal prep lunch ideas floating around these days. Chicken, rice and roasted veggies split evenly across the week.

Sunday afternoon is when this happens in our kitchen, every single week. It’s become a little ritual, honestly!

  • Sunday afternoon, done for days
  • Reheats without drying out

17. Taco Bowl Prep Jars

Taco bowl prep jars stack rice, beans, seasoned meat and salsa in careful layers so nothing gets soggy by Thursday. Shake it out into a bowl. It’s basically taco night on a Tuesday, am I right?

  • Taco night, any weekday
  • Salsa stays on top until served
  • Layers keep everything crisp

18. Weekly Salad Prep Containers

Weekly salad prep containers are one of the simplest lunch meal prep ideas once you get the layering order down. Dressing on the bottom, sturdy veggies next, greens on top. I line up five containers every Sunday like I am prepping for battle.

It feels like winning the whole week before it even starts! Not in my book does anything else come close, lol!

  • Sturdy veggies go in the middle layer
  • Greens stay crisp until Friday

19. Sheet Pan Fajita Boxes

Sheet pan fajita boxes come together on one pan, so cleanup takes about two minutes. Peppers, onions and chicken all roast together until the edges char slightly. I split it into containers while it is still warm because I always forget otherwise.

Lunch for the week is basically handled by Monday morning. How great is that?

  • One pan, five lunches
  • Charred edges add real flavor
  • Splits into containers while warm
