There’s a myth going around that good poses need a fancy art program or years of drawing school. That’s just not true, lol! Some of the best reference poses come from a phone camera and good lighting.

This list pulls from hundreds of pins, sketches and photo dumps that people actually use. I kept the ones that work for beginners, for photo shoots and for quick chibi doodles alike.

Drop the horizon line low so the jump reads higher than it is. He never notices until I point it out, lol!

Sitting On Windowsill Pose

How cute is a character just sitting on a windowsill? One leg tucked, one hanging, maybe a cup of tea nearby.

I use this one whenever a scene feels too loud and needs a breather. It works especially well for slice of life panels. A steaming mug adds a nice touch too.

Hair Flip Sketch Pose

This hair flip sketch pose is dramatic in the best way. Hair mid motion, head tilted back, one hand barely touching a strand.

Not that I’m competitive about which sketch looks the coolest in my folder, haha! This one wins most of the time.

My favorite part is that it says trust without a single word of dialogue. I always throw crossed arms on one character for extra attitude. It somehow works every time!

Crouching warrior stance poses give a character weight and readiness. Knees bent, one hand near the ground, eyes forward.

This is my go to for fantasy characters who need to look dangerous. The lower the stance, the more powerful the read, am I right?

I toss gravity out completely and that’s the whole point. This one turns any ordinary character into something otherworldly!
