Looking for things to do in houston beyond another dinner reservation? Start with colorful art, skyline bike rides and a waterfall worth stopping for.
These ideas mix city sights with a couple of nearby outings in Kemah and Galveston.
You can keep your day simple or pack in a few different stops. Pick the places that catch your eye, then check current opening hours and booking requirements before heading out.

Houston outings worth saving
take in the skyline
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous view of downtown. The towers reflected in the bayou are so pretty, especially with that open stretch of grass in front.
Start your day with a waterside walk. Leave a little room in your plans to stop for a skyline photo rather than rushing straight to the next attraction.
walk through a rainbow of light
How gorgeous is this passageway? Blue fills the foreground while pink and green light curve around the people farther ahead.
This is the kind of art you get to walk through rather than just look at.
Look into the light installations at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston when planning your visit. Follow the posted photography rules if you want a picture of your own.
bike with a downtown view
If you’d rather keep moving, this one is for you. The curving paved path puts the skyline right ahead of the cyclists, with green lawns on either side.
Plan a ride along the Buffalo Bayou trails. Bring a helmet and water, then choose a route that suits how far you actually want to pedal.
see the Waterwall
I love how the falling water fills almost this entire picture. The curved wall makes the Waterwall such a striking stop, even without a complicated photo setup.
Take in the view from the designated public areas at Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park. You don’t need to climb onto a ledge to enjoy that backdrop.
follow the garden cascade
This garden view may just be one of my favorites here. The water runs straight down the middle of the hill, with clipped hedges wrapping around each green level.
Add the McGovern Centennial Gardens to your plans if you like a garden stroll with a little something extra. Pause at the bottom for this straight-on view of the cascade.
get a closer look at dinosaurs
The dinosaur fans are going to love this! That huge horned skull is quite a welcome, with ribs, feet and more skeletal displays stretching into the gallery behind it.
Make time for the paleontology exhibits at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. I’d leave room to wander rather than treating this as a quick photo stop.
pause at the Rothko Chapel
Want a quieter stop between bigger outings? The Rothko Chapel offers a very different setting, with large dark paintings, simple benches and light coming from above.
Put your phone away for a while and give the paintings your attention. This is a place to sit with what you see rather than hurry through a checklist.
explore the mosaics at Smither Park
I am obsessed with the colorful patterns here. Even the winding path is covered in little shapes, leading toward that curved mosaic-covered structure.
Visit Smither Park if you love art with lots of details to notice. Look down at the paths as well as up at the larger pieces.
plan a Kemah Boardwalk outing
Ready to make room for some rides? The Kemah Boardwalk tickets in this photo give you a different kind of outing from museums and garden walks.

Kemah is outside Houston, so treat it as a separate excursion. Check the current ride options before buying tickets rather than relying on the older passes shown here.
find a colorful Houston mural
How cute is this Houston mural? I love the big blue letters with the pink, yellow and green skyline rising behind them.
Add a mural stop to your day if you want a colorful city photo. For a shot like this, leave enough space around the lettering to include the whole design.
look for an evening light display
These glowing butterflies are so pretty overhead. Purple, blue and white lights fill the arched walkway, with visitors following the path underneath.
If you want an evening like this, check Houston’s current seasonal light events. Use this photo as inspiration rather than assuming this exact installation is on display year-round.
try yoga on the lawn
Don’t want every stop to involve sightseeing? No problem! An outdoor yoga class gives you a different way to spend part of the day.
The colorful mats spread across this lawn look lovely beneath the trees and downtown buildings. Look for a scheduled park class, then check whether you need to register or bring your own mat.

take a lakeside break
Sometimes a seat by the water is all you need. I love the tall fountain and the line of trees across the lake in this picture.
Leave a little unplanned time for a park stop like this. Bring a book if you’d like, or simply watch the water before heading back to your busier plans.
visit the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern
This is a very different view from the sunny bayou paths above. Rows of columns disappear into the dim interior, with a lit walkway running along the edge.
Look into a visit to the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern if unusual spaces catch your attention. Check the current tour and reservation details before adding it to your day.

save room for a Ferris wheel
Who doesn’t love the look of a big Ferris wheel against the sky? This white wheel towers over the booths below, with little open-sided gondolas all around it.
If a carnival sounds more like your kind of day, check the Houston rodeo carnival schedule for your travel dates. Treat this as a seasonal idea rather than an always-available stop.
head to Galveston for the beach
I love this beach view with the rides stretching out over the water. The pale pink sky and reflections on the wet sand are just gorgeous.
Make Galveston a separate day trip from Houston if you want beach time and a look at the Pleasure Pier. You can keep it simple with a shoreline walk or check the ride schedule before going.

follow a woodland boardwalk
If you’re looking for a break from buildings and busy attractions, go with a nature walk. This boardwalk curves between tall trunks, with sunlight coming through the trees.
The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is an option to explore for a wooded outing. Check its trail map to choose your route rather than expecting every path to look like this boardwalk.
choose a playful patio stop
Is that a row of spring riders underneath a “Beer Me” sign? This spot certainly has a playful side, lol!
The hanging greenery and big windows give you plenty to look at too.
For an adults-only break, look for a Houston bar patio with a setting you actually want to linger in. Let the quirky decor here inspire your choice rather than assuming the pictured venue is still unchanged.
catch an astros home game
Baseball fans, this one’s for you. The wide view of the field, spectators in the stands and huge roof makes an Astros game a very different outing from a quiet garden afternoon.
Check the home schedule before planning around a game. The photo shows the stadium’s older Minute Maid Park branding, so don’t use the sign alone to identify current booking information.
slow down beside a garden stream
Last but definitely not least, we have this pretty garden scene. I love the water winding between the large rocks, with leafy branches reaching across overhead.
Finish your sightseeing with a slower garden walk. If you’d like a landscaped setting to explore, consider the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park and check its current visiting hours.
