Looking for new year's cake ideas with a little something extra? Think gold stars, midnight clocks and even a disco ball.
These cakes give you plenty to choose from, whether you love simple white frosting or want a whole tower of party decorations.
You can keep things simple or go all out. A few designs here were made for other celebrations, but their colors and details are worth saving for your own countdown cake.
Cake Ideas Worth Saving for the Countdown
gold rim and black pearls
We’re starting off strong with this pretty white cake. I love the thick gold-colored ring around the top and the black and gold pearl-like decorations gathered at the bottom.
If you want a simple new years cake, try this color combination with plenty of plain white space between the two borders.
ivory ruffles
How gorgeous are these uneven ivory ruffles? Fine gold-colored edges run around the tall cake, with a delicate leafy decoration reaching up one side.
The surrounding sparklers make this a dramatic display. For your own table, little battery lights could give you a glow without the open sparks.
a golden pouring tower
If you are looking for a true eye-catcher, then this one is for you. An angled bottle decoration sits above black tiers, gold-colored goblets and clear splash-shaped pieces.
This one includes a 30th-birthday detail near the base. For a New Year version, ask your baker to leave off the birthday wording and keep that over-the-top pouring effect.
stars and white swirls
I am obsessed with these gold-colored stars. They sit among white frosting swirls, with tiny stars and round decorations scattered down the sides.

Keep the larger stars at different heights if you want to follow this look. That little detail is so pretty.
black cake and disco ball
Don’t want a clock or a year topper? This black cake with a huge mirrored disco ball gives you a completely different direction.
The photo shows the ball being positioned with a visible rod and hardware. Treat this as a display reference for your baker, not an edible topper to copy without proper support.
blue midnight clock
This clock cake may just be one of my favorites here. I love the gold-colored numbers against the deep blue top.
The spray of stars coming from the middle is such a cute extra touch.
Ask for the same blue border around the base if you want to keep all that attention on the clock.
silver stars and year numbers
How cute is the star standing in for the zero? This white cake has a silver-colored 2017 topper, scattered stars and little metallic-looking dots.
Swap in the year you’re celebrating, but keep that star-shaped zero idea whenever the digits allow it.
a pastry-ring clock
Here is another clock idea, but it’s a little different from the blue one above. Round golden pastries surround a pale ridged center, with long dark clock hands stretching across it.
The numbers around the upper edge read 2020. Ask for updated digits if you’re borrowing this design for your celebration.
roman numerals and gold edges
I love this oversized clock face on the side of the cake. The black Roman numerals look so pretty against ivory, with irregular gold-colored patches around the top and bottom.
A neat row of pearl-like decorations finishes the base. I’d keep that detail even if you skip the sparklers shown on top.
burgundy piping and cherries
Who says your cake has to be black and gold? These burgundy tiers have cream-colored swags, piped borders and cherries all around the edges.
The cut slice shows dark red layers with pale filling between them. Save this one if you love a vintage-style cake with lots of decoration.
disco balls and a piped tree
How adorable is this little piped tree? It sits on the front of a tall white cake, with a gold-colored star above it and tiny silver and gold accents.
The mirrored balls and Happy New Year topper bring the party theme in. This is a cute way to carry a Christmas detail into your countdown celebration.
bright firework bursts
The color lovers are going to love this! Turquoise, pink, yellow and orange bursts cover the black cake, with little stars tucked into their centers.
Ask for scattered white dots between the fireworks to follow this design. There’s no need for a big topper with this much going on.
dark drips and gold stars
This is such a pretty way to dress up a dark brown cake. Glossy drips run down from the top while small white pieces gather around the base.
I especially love the pale curled decorations underneath the gold-colored stars. You could keep those stars as the main topper and leave out the sparkler.
a little goodbye cake
Don’t want to go all out with a tall cake? No problem!
This little boxed cake has tan and black frosting swirls, gold-colored accents and a Goodbye 2022 message.
Update the outgoing year for your own version. I’d keep the alternating colors around the edge just like this.
gold bow and midnight clock
There’s so much to love here, from the big gold-colored bow to the dotted black bottom tier. A clock, bottle-shaped decoration and tall star picks fill the top.
The hands point to midnight, which makes this such a fun countdown design. Save the whole cake as a reference if you want something with lots of different details.
blue swags and a crescent moon
I am obsessed with this blue cake. The piped swags, white starbursts and little crescent moon are absolutely gorgeous.
Keep the alternating blue and white borders if you want the same decorated look without adding a year or a message.
burgundy and golden bubbles
This burgundy cake is another favorite. Mostly because the gold-colored balls look like bubbles spilling from the angled bottle decoration.
The pale flower at the bottom is so pretty beside the dark finish. A script Happy New Year topper completes the design without covering the bubble cluster.

white flowers on a glossy cake
Don’t want clocks, bottles or big lettering? Simply try this glossy dark cake with white flowers and trails of silver-colored dots.
I love how some of the decorations continue down the side. It gives you a celebration cake without making every detail about midnight.
white cake with golden stars
If you are looking for a simpler design, this one is for you. Gold-colored stars and tiny flecks decorate a white cake, with a pale golden tint around the bottom.

The mix of solid and outlined stars is my favorite part. Add a Happy New Year topper like this one to finish the look.
red bands and gold coins
Last but definitely not least, we have this red-and-gold birthday design. Gold-colored coin decorations fill the top, with red bands wrapping around the ridged brown sides.

The central character and coin motif suggest a Lunar New Year direction rather than a midnight countdown theme. If that’s the celebration you’re planning, ask your baker to adapt the birthday wording while keeping the red and gold details.
