20 Things to Do in Ohio From Waterfalls to Waterfront Stops

Looking for things to do in ohio that go beyond your usual weekend plans? Think forest walks, roller coasters, food markets and little island streets.

These pictures give you plenty to choose from, whether you’d rather spend the day outside or wander through a museum.

You can keep it simple with one stop or build a trip around a few favorites. Check current opening times and access before heading out, especially for seasonal attractions and trails.

Ohio outings worth adding to your list

rock history in Cleveland

We’re starting off strong with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The glass pyramid makes quite a backdrop for the oversized painted guitars in this photo.

I especially love the blue one with little city scenes across its body.

Plan a museum visit if music is your thing. Treat the guitar display as inspiration rather than a promise of what’s outside today.

a walk between rocky walls

Want a little less city and a lot more green? This wooded ravine is such a pretty change of scenery.

Tall rock walls frame the trees overhead, with mossy ledges tucked into the shade.

Look for an Ohio gorge trail with terrain that suits you. Follow the marked route rather than climbing onto rocks just for a photo.

a ride on Millennium Force

The roller coaster fans are going to love this! That blue train is Millennium Force at Cedar Point, with rows of riders heading down the track.

Add it to your ride list if big coasters are your kind of fun. Check the current ride status and rider requirements before joining the line.

a countryside drive

If you’re looking for a slower-paced outing, consider a drive through Ohio’s Amish Country. The horse-drawn buggy and green fields here offer a very different scene from the theme parks.

Give buggies plenty of space on the road. Stick to businesses that welcome visitors and ask permission before photographing people.

a flower-filled village stroll

How pretty is this little passage? I love the red awnings, brick buildings and flowers spilling around the walkway.

The American and German flags add another detail worth noticing.

Make room for a neighborhood stroll rather than rushing straight to your next stop. A flower-lined walkway like this is a lovely spot to explore before a lunch break.

harbor views on Kelleys Island

Don’t want to fill your day with a long checklist? No problem!

A Kelleys Island outing could start with a harbor walk and a look at the boats.

The colorful arrows in this photo point in practically every direction. Pick a place to eat after checking what’s currently open, then leave a little time to enjoy the waterfront.

an outdoor market browse

This is my kind of browsing setup. Bright tents line the street, baskets hang beside a stall and flower boxes fill the windows above.

Look for an outdoor market during your visit and give yourself time to wander. You don’t need a shopping list to enjoy looking around.

a waterfall viewing stop

I love how this waterfall spreads across the layered rock. There isn’t just one narrow stream here.

Several ribbons of water spill over the ledges with green trees all around.

Choose a designated waterfall overlook for your own outing. Bring your camera, but leave the wet rocks and fallen branches out of your walking route.

polar bears at the pool

How cute are these two with their noses tipped upward? Watching animals in the water could be a lovely part of a zoo day.

If polar bears are high on your list, check the zoo’s current animal information before booking. This photo doesn’t establish which Ohio zoo it shows or what you’ll see on your visit.

a wander through Put-in-Bay

This Put-in-Bay street has plenty to catch your eye, from the tall clock tower to the golf carts lined up outside. I love the blue awning against the brick.

Plan a downtown wander with a lunch stop. If you’d rather explore by golf cart, check rental rules and availability ahead of time.

big aircraft in Dayton

If you love seeing enormous machines up close, the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton belongs on your list. Just look at the aircraft towering over the visitors in this photo!

Start with the planes that interest you most rather than trying to hurry through everything. The nose, propellers and cockpit windows alone give you plenty to study.

the waterfall at Ash Cave

This Ash Cave view may just be one of my favorites here. The narrow waterfall drops past a huge rock overhang, with people below showing just how large the recess is.

Add this Hocking Hills stop to your walking plans. Water flow varies, so don’t expect the waterfall to look exactly like the photo every day.

an evening in the Short North

Those lighted arches are so pretty above the street. Columbus’s Short North is a lovely starting point if your plans lean more toward shops and dinner than hiking boots.

Try arriving before dusk so you can browse first, then see the lights come on. Keep your photos to the sidewalk rather than copying this roadway viewpoint.

Cedar Point from the waterfront

Here’s another side of Cedar Point, with colorful tracks rising above the water. The blue coaster curves and red Ferris wheel make this view especially fun.

If you’re planning a park day, leave a little room for the scenery too. This is a photographed view, not a guarantee that every ride shown is still operating in the same form.

bridge lights by the river

I am obsessed with the lights on the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge. The glowing towers and blue suspension structure look gorgeous against the city buildings.

Make a Cincinnati riverfront walk part of your evening plans. Choose a public riverside viewpoint if you want to photograph the bridge without rushing.

football history in Canton

Calling all football fans! The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton is an easy one to build an outing around if you love the sport.

The entrance here has a tall football-shaped feature, flower beds and a huge player banner. Head inside for the museum rather than making this only a photo stop.

a stop at Marblehead Lighthouse

Don’t want to go all out with a packed itinerary? Keep it simple with a visit to Marblehead Lighthouse.

I love the red railing and cap against the pale tower.

Enjoy the shoreline setting from the grounds. If you’re hoping to go inside the lighthouse, check the current tour schedule separately.

a browse through West Side Market

Who else would want to look at every counter before choosing something? Cleveland’s West Side Market has rows of stalls beneath this gorgeous arched ceiling.

Give yourself time to browse the food displays and look up at the brickwork. Check market hours before you go, then pick something that catches your eye.

curved glass and quiet architecture

This is a lovely idea for anyone who notices the building as much as the exhibits. Curved glass walls frame a narrow passage here, with reflections overlapping the courtyard tables.

Consider the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion for an architecture-focused museum stop. I’d leave time to look at the changing reflections rather than walking straight through.

a closer look at rocky passages

Last but definitely not least, we have a more adventurous-looking rock passage. The people here are using their hands to move through a narrow opening between huge rock faces.

If this appeals to you, choose an authorized route that matches your abilities and check its restrictions first. You don’t have to squeeze through a gap to enjoy Ohio’s rocky scenery.
