19 Unique Things to Do in Vienna, From Café Stops to City Views

Looking for unique things to do in vienna beyond a quick palace photo? Think checkerboard cafés, a slide high above the city and a little time browsing tables full of vintage treasures.

There are a few famous stops worth keeping on your list too.

You can keep your days simple or fit in something a little unexpected. Start with the places that catch your eye, then leave room for coffee and cake.

That chocolate slice is pretty convincing!

Vienna experiences worth saving

ride the Prater Ferris wheel

We’re starting off strong with the Prater’s giant Ferris wheel. I love those red cabins against the blue evening sky.

The glowing lamps and lights around the entrance make this such a pretty stop after a day of sightseeing.

If you want to follow the mood of this photo, plan your visit around dusk.

coffee and cake at Demel

How good does this chocolate cake look? A slice on a patterned plate, coffee in white cups and an ornate tray make quite the café spread.

The Demel napkin tells you where this little break is happening.

Put your sightseeing list aside for a bit and order whatever catches your eye in the cake display.

find a checkerboard café corner

I am obsessed with this black-and-white café interior. The checks climb from the floor onto the walls, with plants tucked between windows and hanging above the tables.

Save this photo if you’re drawn to Vienna’s Hundertwasser-style spaces. That red column is such a fun detail among all the squares.

browse tables of vintage treasures

If you love a good rummage, this one is for you. There’s so much to look through here, from little teacups and tall coffee pots to colorful bowls and lamps.

Try adding a flea-market visit to your plans rather than heading straight to a souvenir shop. I’d start with those mismatched cups.

look into the Spanish Riding School

The white horse beneath these courtyard arches is such a lovely sight. Its dark saddle and pale saddle pad are clearly visible as a handler leads it past the open doorways.

If the Spanish Riding School is on your list, check its official options for performances, training sessions or guided visits. Don’t assume the stable courtyard is somewhere you can simply wander into.

look up in the State Hall

This library may just be one of my favorite interiors here. I love the towering bookshelves and gold-colored decoration, but that painted ceiling deserves a proper look too.

Visit the Austrian National Library’s State Hall with time to pause. The central statue and patterned floor are just as worth noticing as everything overhead.

choose lunch from a deli counter

Don’t want another formal sit-down meal? A little counter like this is a lovely alternative.

There are plates of prepared food behind the glass, baskets at the front and tables tucked into the back.

Ask what’s available that day rather than trying to identify every dish through the display. Then choose a few things that sound good to you.

walk beneath climbing roses

How pretty is this rose-covered walkway? Red flowers climb the curved framework while its shadow makes a whole second pattern along the path.

Leave room for a garden walk in your itinerary if you’re visiting during rose season. Flowering changes with the weather, so treat this as inspiration rather than a guaranteed view.

try the Danube Tower slide

A slide this high above the city? This one is definitely for the more adventurous part of your itinerary!

The enclosed tube curves around its support with the river and buildings far below.

Look into the Danube Tower slide if you want more than a viewing-platform visit. Check current operating details and rider requirements before booking.

take the garden route at Belvedere

I love this view of Belvedere with the fountain in front. The pale façade, green roof and clipped garden shapes give you plenty to admire before you even head indoors.

Rather than rushing straight to the entrance, leave time for a walk through the grounds. Stop where you can see both the palace and its reflection.

catch sunset by the water

This is such a pretty way to end a busy day. The yellow bridge supports glow against the orange sky, with long reflections stretching across the water.

Plan an evening waterside walk if you want a break from the city-center sights. I’d keep the schedule loose enough to stop when the sky starts changing.

skate in front of City Hall

How gorgeous is this evening skating scene? Vienna’s City Hall is lit up behind the rink, with strings of lights overhead and little pools of color across the ice.

Save this for a winter trip. Check the current Wiener Eistraum dates before building your evening around it, since this isn’t a year-round setup.

make an evening of Mozart

If you want an evening that’s a little different from dinner and drinks, look into a concert at the Musikverein. These tickets are for a Vienna Mozart Orchestra performance in the Brahms Hall.

Choose by the actual program and hall, not just the picture on the ticket. The tickets shown are from a past performance, so check the current listings for your dates.

see the city lights from above

Don’t want to fill every evening with bookings? No problem!

A city viewpoint gives you a different way to spend the night. I love the scattered lights beneath the wide, dark sky here.

Choose an accessible lookout and plan your return journey before heading up. You don’t need to chase this exact moonlit scene to enjoy the view.

wander through a glasshouse

This is one for anyone who loves being surrounded by plants. Huge leaves crowd the path, with pink flowers peeking through beneath the curved glass roof.

Add a visit to one of Vienna’s public glasshouses if you want a change from grand streets and palace rooms. Take your time looking at the smaller flowers too.

leave time for a swim

A swimming break belongs on a summer itinerary too. This photo keeps it simple: one swimmer, blue water and rippling light over the tiled pool floor.

Look for a public pool that fits your route and check its opening times. This is pool inspiration rather than a reason to assume any stretch of city water is suitable for swimming.

sit beneath the Palmenhaus roof

I am obsessed with this soaring glass roof. The red booths, long bar and greenery make the Palmenhaus feel very different from a small coffeehouse.

Choose this stop if you like your café break with plenty to look at. I’d pick a table where you can see the curved roof and the plants hanging overhead.

take a quiet cemetery walk

This is a quieter side of the city. An old memorial sits among ivy and overhanging branches, with low railings almost disappearing into the greenery.

If historic cemeteries interest you, make time for a respectful walk through one of Vienna’s burial grounds. Stay on permitted paths and leave the monuments and plants undisturbed.

pause at Demel’s window

Last but definitely not least, take a proper look at Demel’s window display. The detailed cathedral model is gorgeous, especially with the lit Christmas trees behind it.

This gives you another reason to pause here beyond coffee and cake. Displays change, but a little window-shopping detour is worth keeping in mind if you’re nearby.
